How To Install Cabinet Hardware (Cabinet Handles, Knobs, and Pulls)

Installing cabinet hardware can be an intimidating prospect, especially when working on multiple doors or drawers. These are the general steps when installing knobs or pulls.

  1. Measure and mark: Measure the distance between the two screw holes on the back of the cabinet pull. Then, using a measuring tape or ruler, mark the center of the cabinet where you want the pull (or knob) to be placed. Use a pencil to mark where the screw holes will go.
  2. Drill pilot holes: Using an appropriate size drill bit, drill pilot holes for the screws where you made your marks. Make sure the drill bit is smaller than the screws you will be using so that the holes are tight enough to hold the screws securely.
  3. Install the pull or knob: Use a drill or screwdriver to attach the hardware with the screws.

The simplest way to ensure accuracy and repeatability — and save a lot of time and effort — is to use our Cabinet Hardware Jig.

Where Should Cabinet Hardware be Placed?
Place the pull so the bottom of the pull lines up with the bottom rail of the door for upper cabinets, or so that the top of the pull lines up with the top rail for lower cabinets. Center the pull on the vertical style.

What is the rule of thumb for cabinet hardware?
The general rule of thumb for installing hardware is to use pulls that are about 1/3 the length of the door or drawer they are being attached to.

How To Install Cabinet Hinges
Much like installing knobs and pulls, hinges can be difficult to get just right, especially if you’re working on multiple doors

  1. Measure and mark: Measure and mark where you want the hinges to be placed on the cabinet door and frame.
  2. Pre-drill holes: Using a drill and the appropriate size drill bit, pre-drill pilot holes where you have marked for the hinge screws. Be sure to drill straight and to the correct depth to avoid damaging the cabinet or hinge.
  3. Install hinges on the cabinet door: Hold the hinge in place on the cabinet door and secure it with screws. Repeat this process for all hinges on the cabinet door.
  4. Attach the hinges to the cabinet frame: Hold the cabinet door up to the frame and position the hinges so that they line up with the pilot holes on the frame. Use screws to attach the hinges to the frame.

Our Concealed Hinge Jig and Cabinet Door Mounting Jig significantly streamline and simplify the process of installing hinges and hanging cabinet doors.

Where Should Cabinet Hinges be Placed?
It’s generally good to install hinges so they are 2” from the top and bottom of the door they are being attached to. Installation can vary among hinge types/brands, so be sure to consult the instructions if you have questions about placement.

What is the correct spacing for cabinet door hinges?
If you’re using three hinges, set the middle hinge an equal distance between the top and bottom hinges.

Should You Put Hinges on the Door or Frame First?
Install the hinges on the door before mounting the door to the frame.
